Memphis Everyone's
Help Needed The Memphis City Council continues to drag out the funding for MCS. After approving the MCS budget and agreeing to pay $50 million to MCS for this school year (as directed by Chancellor Kenny Armstrong) the council now is waiting to work out an agreement with the Shelby County Commission to gradually assume funding over time for MCS. On January 13th, the Tennessee Court of Appeals ruled that the city is obligated to fund MCS. The city council has said they plan to appeal the decision again after losing three decisions wasting more tax dollars on legal fees. The council should immediately comply with the chancellor’s order and fund the $50 million while they work out the single source funding details with the Shelby County Commission. We need elected officials that support public education and who are willing to work together with MCS in a constructive manner for the good of our entire community. We need you to email the city council members and encourage them to fully fund MCS immediately. Stand for Children has a kickoff event Saturday, May 15 from 1000 am until 1200 noon at the National Civil Rights Museum, 450 Mulberry Street. Refreshments and free childcare will be provided. For more information, you can look at: http://www.stand.org/Page.aspx?pid=1410. Founded in 1999, Tennessee Stand for Children brings together people from all walks of life – parents, grandparents, people who work with children and others who care about the next generation – in order to make children a top political priority. Tennessee Stand for Children members believe we need to invest in our children now – particularly in their education and enrichment from pre-school through high school – to ensure they have a fair chance in life and to create a better future for Tennessee. Through effective advocacy, Tennessee Stand for Children Chapters have won 15 victories that have directly improved the lives of more than 300,000 children in the state and leveraged more than $149 million in public funding for children's programs. With Chapters currently in Memphis, Nashville, and Hamilton County/Chattanooga, Stand for Children is fast becoming a strong, statewide citizen voice that Tennessee's children urgently need. |
